No Longer in Effect - Employment of Illinois Workers on Public Works Act

3/17/2022

Following the announcement by the U.S. Department of Labor on May 14, 2022 that the state's jobless rate had fallen to 5 percent, the Illinois Department of Labor concluded enforcement of the Employment of Illinois Workers on Public Works Act, enacted in July 2020 to alleviate unemployment in Illinois by ensuring that most workers on public works projects were residents of the state.

As noted by the Acting Director, the Illinois Department of Labor will continue enforcing the Illinois Prevailing Wage Act to ensure public tax dollars are granted to local contractors and workers.

State law mandates enforcement of the Employment of Illinois Workers on Public Works Act when the jobless rate is above 5 percent.
